Harp Sizes   Each  harp I build can be designed and built of be as compact, or as large as you desire.  This means all the dimensions, height, width of the harp from the box out to the pillar, the width and size of the sound box, etc. With this very flexible design service, the size and weight of the harps I build can vary wildly, depending on your needs. For example, a typical weight for a 36 string harp I can build, with a C to C note range, is about 18 Lbs. And the typical height would be about 56 inches. But for a person who sits taller (or who wishes to be able to play standing up), then the total height of the same harp might be up to 63 inches or more, with the same number of notes. Or, the same harp could be built to be more compact as well.

Nylon, Gut, Phosphor Bronze, or Steel Strung.      I am currently building single string band harps with any of the string materials listed above, in any number of strings from 19 to 45 strings.  The note possibilities, (for the nylon and gut strung harps), can go from the high first octave 'G' note, down to the low Sixth Octave 'E'.  Wire strung harps, can have nearly the same note range, with the exception of the highest note usually being the first Octave 'A'.

I install full sets of Loveland sharping levers on all my nylon and gut strung harps. Loveland levers can be installed on my wire harps, if the string band design has spacing to allow them. Other types of sharping levers can be installed at increased cost, on my gut and nylon harps. Please inquire about these options.

On my Nylon Strung Harps,
the string tension can vary from a true Pedal Harp tension, to a very light Gothic type, or anywhere in between.  The string spacing can also be widely varied, designed to match the harp that you currently play, or to perfectly match your hand and finger sizes.  Depending on the type of sound desired,  and the note range, there are a number of different choices of base-string material  that can be used.  If you already play one type of harp, and wish for me to build a smaller or larger harp, for you, with the same string spacing, string tension and type of sound, it can be done with no problem.

My Gut Strung Harps can be built with all the same string tension and spacing options as my nylon strung ones. I use a custom computer program to design all my string sets, and with Gut, this allows me to vary the tension from what is used on Pedal harps, to give you just the sound and string tension you desire.

Wire Strung Harps   I build my wire strung harps with different string tensions and spacing designed  to match your playing technique. For example, finger tip playing technique generally requires a wider string spacing than would be needed for finger nail playing. I  can also build a wire harp with either a solid Spruce soundboard, or with a solid hardwood one, depending on the type of sound desired.  The solid hardwood board will produce notes with a longer sustained ringing, while the Spruce board will make a bit softer sound, requiring less string damping. The three most common metals used on wire strung harps all produce a different type of sound. Steel is the brightest,  with a loud  long sustain, and it is used only rarely.  Bronze is by far the most common, with Brass being used in combination with Bronze, some of the time.

Sound boxes.  My sound boxes are usually built in a five sided, (not counting the soundboard), staved configuration. I cut all three pieces of each side of the sound box, so the wood grain flows from one panel to the next. Starting at the soundboard, and then flowing to the back, where the book matching reverses direction, and back to the other side of the soundboard. I can, upon request build you a harp with a four sided sound box, counting the soundboard as the fourth side. This type of sound box is often used when building a harp styled after some of the ancient Gothic or Celtic models. With this shape sound box, the wood grain will still flow around the box, as described above.

String spacing and Tension.  As on all my harps, I can build your new harp to have any string spacing and string tension you wish to have. Anything from  true concert-harp string  spacing and tension, to  a close spaced, light tension Gothic type. Using my custom computer program, and a library of over one-thousand harp string patterns, I can reproduce a string spacing and tension that you are already comfortable with. I may also ask you to directly measure the spacing on your current harp, in order to give you a perfect match for your new harp. For my wire harps, I can vary the spacing depending on how you intend to play your harp. For traditional wire playing, a narrow string spacing is desirable. But, if you intend to use your finger-tips in playing, then a bit wider spacing is needed.

Double Strung lap harpDouble Strung Harps

Nylon, gut and Wire strung models.

I build double strung nylon, gut and wire harps in any size from 19 x 2, up to 45 x 2, strings. Possible notes range from high first octave 'G', down to low Sixth octave 'D', (in either Gut or Nylon strings), with the highest note on my double wire harps being a First Octave 'A'. It is also possible to have more pronounced base notes on one side of a double harp. This is done by using wire base strings on one side , and nylon ones on the other. This can only be done on harps with at least 25 or more strings.  And as with all my harps, there are many options possible , concerning  the string spacing, tension, size and style of the harp.

Please go to my Harp Price List Page, for prices on all my custom double harp sizes.

Double strung Koa Wood lap harpThe Harp shown above is in just one of many possible shapes and styles that are possible for double strung harps. It was designed to as compact as possible, which caused the pillar to assume a straight shape.  The owner of this harp also wanted the neck to be smooth and flowing in shape, without any of the more typical Celtic elements.  My double strung harps can be as complex in shape and style, as my other harps.  If you have any ideas for your own dream, double harp, do not hesitate to ask me !

Please email me with any questions you may have !

Harp shown here: Double nylon strung Koa wood harp, with 26 strings on one side and 27 on the other. Left base side also has metal core strings to give a stronger base notes on that side. The style shown is a simple modified Gothic "look'.  Many, other possibilities in double harp styles can be designed and built.

Cross Strung Harps

Nylon, Gut, and Wire  strung models

I build cross strung harps with almost any configuration of whole and half notes possible.  The main limitation on the possible note range of a custom cross strung harp is on the bass end of the note range, where crossing bass notes may hit each other. For this reason, the lowest crossing bass note is usually the low Sixth Octave 'C' (two C`s below middle C). Like all my harps, my cross strung models can be built to be larger or smaller, and with different shaped necks and pillars, and with different string tensions, all depending on the Harper's wishes.

Please go to my Price List Page, for prices on all my custom cross strung harp sizes.

The harp shown below , is in just one type of shape and style that is possible. Generally, a cross harp will need to have a straighter pillar than other types of  harps, if the design is intended to keep the harp as small as possible, as in this pictured harp in the middle.  But the pillar could have had almost any other possible shape, if more size to the over-all harp was possible.

Harp Shown above right:  Nylon strings , Myrtle wood cross strung harp with 26 natural notes, 44 notes in total.  Soundboard is solid Spruce.  The sound box is five-sided, staved book matched.  The sound holes on the back are inspired by the Yin / Yang symbol.

How To Order Your Own Custom Harp

Payment can be made with cash check or money order, Visa, or  Master card. And now via Allegro Acceptance

First let me know what size, number of strings, and type of harp you are interested in having me build for you.  I can then give you a base price quote, that will include the custom designing of all technical and artistic aspects of your proposed harp.

The quoted base price includes a full set of Loveland or Camac sharpening levers,( on single and double strung gut and nylon models),  and a five year warranty on your harp`s construction.  Your harp-to-be, can be designed and built in many different "looks" and styles at no additional cost.  There is an extra cost for any actual carving, painting, and /or inlay work. Shipping and handling costs are also extra.

Your harp order is confirmed, with a one third down payment of the base price.

I will be able at this point to give you an estimated date of completion.

When I actually start construction of  your harp, I will ask for another one third payment  toward the balance, which I will use to buy materials and for other expenses.  When your harp is finished and ready to ship to you, the final third of the cost will then be due.  If you have a need for me to take longer to build your harp, depending on your budget needs, I can usually make what ever adjustments are needed to the time line.

Cancellation Policy: Once your harp has been ordered and the deposit has been received, Mountain Glen Harps LLC considers your order to be binding. Should you cancel your order, $500.00 of your deposit is non-refundable. The remaining deposit money will be returned to you after the harp we are building for you sells, or after we receive a one third down payment from another buyer of your harp. Due to the individual nature of a custom order harp, it can be sometimes hard to re-sell such a harp.

At the time of completion, the shipping and packing cost will be determined, and will be quoted to you.

Once your order is confirmed with the one third down payment, we can then discuss any additional  artistic or decorative work you may wish me to do. I can work from any drawings or photos you may have, or I can research any decorative theme you may be interested in having me carry out.  I always draw a full sized , to scale, drawing of all the custom harps I build, for each client`s approval. Based on all the information you have given me about your dream-harp, I will integrate it all together to show you what it might look like. When you receive the drawing, you can then feel free to make any changes you wish, right on the drawing, and I will either send you back a revised drawing for final approval, or just build from what you have approved, with or without any changes you have made.  The drawings show cross sections of the top and bottom of the sound box, a full , to scale side view, based on the actual string spacing used, and any details of sound holes shape, etc. This is to give an accurate  idea of what your new dream harp will look like !

If at any time before I actually start to build your harp, that you wish to change any aspect of the proposed harp, such as making it larger or adding more strings, this is usually not a problem for me to do.  Also any changes or additions to the proposed decorative work can be changed as well

So,...... Please let me know all about the Harp Of Your Dreams !   I look forward to     bringing it to life for you.
